$2,000–$3,100 over 10 years

Expect the biggest difference: no more frost on the glass and no cold draft when you sit near a window.

How we estimate this

Your yearly bill × the part that is really heating and cooling (natural gas 85%, propane 85%, electric 75%, heat pump 70%) × the share lost through windows × how much of that new windows stop × the share of a typical 15-window home you're replacing (capped at 100%).

  • Single-pane: 25–30% of heating and cooling lost through windows; new windows stop 55–70% of that.
  • Single-pane with storms: 20–25% of heating and cooling lost through windows; new windows stop 45–60% of that.
  • Old double-pane (pre-2000): 17–22% of heating and cooling lost through windows; new windows stop 35–50% of that.
  • Newer double-pane: 12–15% of heating and cooling lost through windows; new windows stop 12–22% of that.

New windows are assumed to be ENERGY STAR double-pane with Low-E glass and argon. Homes built before 1980 get a small bump for leakier frames. Energy prices are held flat. For a typical single-pane home the result falls inside the U.S. Department of Energy's range of about $126–$465 a year. Your home will differ; this is a starting point, not a promise.

Where the savings come from.

The coating keeps your heat inside in winter and the sun’s heat outside in summer.

Your furnace's heat hits the coating and bounces back into the room.

Other things to know.

Low-E glass

An invisible coating that reflects heat back where it came from: inside in winter, outside in summer.

Argon gas

A harmless, dense gas between the panes that slows heat loss better than air.

ENERGY STAR

Ohio falls in the Northern climate zone. Ask to see the rating label on any window you're considering.

Federal tax credit

The 25C credit ended for windows and doors installed after December 31, 2025. Installed in 2025? Claim it on your 2025 return.

Utility programs

Ask Ohio Edison, Toledo Edison or Columbia Gas of Ohio what they offer right now. Programs change.
